After updating the SQL Server Data Tools in Microsoft Visual Studio 2013, creating a LigthSwitch project will result in an error: ‘…\Application1.lsxtproj’ cannot be opened because its project type (.lsxtproj) is not supported by this version of the application. To open it, please use a version that supports this type of project.
I installed everything regarding the SQL Server Data Tools and after restarting Microsoft Visual Studio 2013, I could create a LightSwitch project again.
On my development machine: “Micrososft Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2013 – March 2014 Update” is installed.LightSwitch, Visual Studio

I’m facing the same issue, but dont understand your solution. What do you mean by “I installed verything regarding the SQL Server Data Tools” ? Is there any special version you need to install ?
Can you provide us with a screenshot of components, you think are related ?
Thanks in advance,
Just to update:
If “.lsxtproj is not supported” error still remains after installation of SQL Server Data Tools and MS Office Developer Tools for VS2013 – March 2014 Update, try to install Visual Studio 2013 Update 5. That helped me to solve this error.
I have the same problem but in visual studio 2015 Enterprise
