Nice one Microsoft: Internet Explorer 9 will not let me download Visual Studio 11, but Google chrome will.

When I click to download Microsoft Visual Studio 2011 on MSDN in IE 9, the MSDN Subscriptions Download Manager starts and when I click the [Save] button in the "Save As" dialog box:

The error [The requested file is not available for download. Contact the author of the page that contains the link. This download will be canceled.] appears.

Well in Google Chrome, the download just starts ?!

Solving IE 9 new tab hang

After you install a very old version of the SourceGear Vault client (v3.1.9.3798), opening a link in a new tab in IE 9 will hang that new tab. This is caused by the SourceGear Vault isntaller, overwriting some registry settings. I posted a similar problem on IE 8 [https://www.roelvanlisdonk.nl/?p=871], but that fix, did not fix the problem in IE 9.

I found my solution on: http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&;cat=42&id=133&artlang=en

Running the [ie8-rereg.all] fixed my problem.

IE 9: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Unable to get value of the property ‘srcElement’: object is null or undefined

When accessing an .net 3.5 web application in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, I get the error:

Microsoft JScript runtime error: Unable to get value of the property ‘srcElement’: object is null or undefined

When the "Compatibility View" button is pushed the error is resolved, but I am still investigating what the cause of the error is and if it can be fixed without reminding all the users of the website to push the "Compatibility View" button Winking smile

Internet Explorer 9 and SharePoint 2010: Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer

When you want to open a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 library in Microsoft Windows Explorer you can get the error:

Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer.

This was due to installing a very old version of the SourceGear Client v3.1.9.
I solved this issue by using the same trick as with the IE 8 tab hang issue https://www.roelvanlisdonk.nl/?p=871

Showing the feed xml instead of the feed content in IE

If you automatically want to show the feed xml instead of the feed content in IE, when viewing a RSS feed.

Disable the “Turn on feed reading view” setting.

Tools > Internet Options > Content > Settings > uncheck “Turn on feed reading view”

(after changing the setting, I had to restart IE)

For developing ODATA services, this can be handy.

Showing the feed: https://www.roelvanlisdonk.nl/?feed=rss2 will result in:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

<rss version="2.0" xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/" xmlns:wfw="http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" xmlns:sy="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/syndication/" xmlns:slash="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/">

Stop the presses: mega performance boost for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 on opening office documents, by using a Internet Explorer setting

We are using Microsoft SharePoint for our intranet since 2006, but users started to put there office documents local or on other products like TFS, NAS (File Share), just because opening a Microsoft Office document would take a lot of time (ranging from 10s to 2 minutes). The VISIO documents were the worst of all (always waiting for minutes before I could start working on the document, but then when I saved the Microsoft VISIO document I was waiting for minutes again).  So after being frustrated for over 4 years, here comes along our Microsoft SharePoint Administrator: Jan Willem Nieuwenhuizen, he did a google on it and found the solution:

Start Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings”:

Disable “Automatically detect settings”

Enable “Use a proxy server for LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections)”

Enable “Bypass proxy server for local addresses”

image

Press Advanced

image

Enter *.* in the “Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with”:

Press OK

Can I have a hooray for JW: hooray hooray hooray

IE 8 Developer Tools do not show when pressing F12 (Windows 7)

If you press F12 in IE 8, the developer tools should show (In IE7 this was the developer toolbar). But if you’re developer tools are “un-pinned” it will be a separate window, by hovering the IE icon on the widows bar, you will see the developer tools window (right window):

Right click on the Developer Tools preview windows and click maximize, then press Ctrl+P to pin the developer tools.

2 – Close all your IE windows and processes.
3 – Save your document on your Desktop by example, with the .bat extension. Right-click on it, and select “Run as administrator”.
4 – Test if this tip resolved your issue by openning IE. If you use a Windows 32 bits version, please replace %ProgramFiles(x86)% by %ProgramFiles% in your .bat file.
